TV Help

Culled From:
#1 Radio & Internet Daily News and Commentary on the key issues
"Basic Terrestrial Radio might be the last of the truly 'free' media available . . .
requiring no costly equipment, content subscriptions or on-demand fees.
But local ad revenues have been eroding and the industry is fighting to respond to satellite radio, Internet radio and downloads, MP3, a music industry in chaos, new radio HD technology, and competition from multiple new sources...
What to do?
Read this entire story in IBLNews.com here
"Dan Mason, president of CBS Radio division has said: 'For years we tried to figure out how to make the product compatible for the audience, but the issue was the platform, not the content.
In the near future, every radio station will have the ability to become a TV station. We will see webcast and webisodes.
There’s no reason we can't have our own webcast shows with talent...'
"One example of the radio trying to be visualized through the Internet is CBS' 670 The Score, who has partnered with Paltalk to enable listeners to participate in live, interactive video streams of the station’s popular weekday sports talk shows.
Listeners can see the on-air personalities live in the studio as well as other listeners who are streaming video of themselves. In addition, listeners interact with the hosts and each other through text, audio and video."
How can I Watch Free TV Online?
There are a lot of alternatives to cable television today with the advent of the Internet, and not all of them cost money or require you to register for viewing.
As with any broadcast service, channel selection, picture quality, and the ability to pick and choose specific shows varies with what service you connect to.
Delivery Options 2009
There are a few different methods to receive free online TV service:
In-line Browser Supported Video
In-line browser supported video requires only a browser to play the content, as long as you have the proper audio and video codecs installed to decode the video and audio streams.
Most sites will tell you which codecs or plugins are required for proper video and audio playback.
Download and Play
A lot of TV content is provided online as downloadable files. These files are encoded in one video and audio format or another and require playback software to view the content.
Keep in mind that different formats have different quality and storage characteristics, and you should target the types that suit your viewing preferences.
Content that has a lower quality due to lossy compression or low bitrates require less bandwidth and time to download, but are not high-quality.
Content that uses lossless compression and higher bitrates require more bandwidth and time to download, and also consumes more storage space.
Specialized Software Delivery Services
Some content providers require you to download specialized software to gain access to their TV content.
This software is usually proprietary in nature, and may be funded through ad services, registration fees, or other mechanisms commonly used to provide free services and still have it be a financially self-sufficient business.
Selection Options
There are also a few different mindsets on how the TV shows are made available:
"Live Streaming"
Live streaming providers basically use content provided by broadband, over the air, or satellite providers and publish them for viewing with little delay from the original airtime. Most of these providers focus on the high profile and prolific TV station networks, news networks, and sports networks. With some patience, you can generally find most common networks available for pseudo-live viewing. There is generally a short delay between the actual broadcast and the online broadcast due to network latency, delays, caching and other factors.
Menu of Available Shows
A lot of the TV content providers record shows and make them available to the public through a menu of specific show offerings. You can search through the menu for a specific show, episode or movie from the content that have available, and basically play it on demand.
Many providers tend to focus only on popular or niche shows in specific genres, and rotate their content on a regular basis. Others focus on only a single show and retain all the episodes for future viewing.
Specialized Content
Many free online TV services provide a live streaming experience, but choose what content is played at any given time. These tend to be shows that were recorded previously and are played at the whim of the source provider.
Think of them as a pirate TV station online.
Technical Details
Bandwidth Requirements
Bandwidth requirements for TV over the Internet varies depending on video and audio quality, compression, video size, and streaming services. Dial-up users will probably not have a good experience watching TV over the Internet unless they cache much or most of the content before playback. Caching may not be reasonable if the TV content that is being viewed is very large, or otherwise remote. If you intend on watching online TV, expect to invest in a cable or DSL connection to the Internet. A discussion of the differences between cable and DSL connectivity can be found.
Effects of Jitter
Jitter may cause your TV viewing to exhibit low frame rates, jumpy video, artifacts in the video image, stuttering audio, or other negative factors. Spyware or other malicious software packages on your personal computer may also cause jitter-like effects.
Effects of Reliability Issues
An unreliable Internet connection may cause your video and audio experience to halt, disconnect, restart, or otherwise disrupt viewing. This is specifically a problem if you have an improperly configured or designed wireless network, or if you have physical problems between your computer and your cable or DSL modem.
Computer Processing Power
Any new computer that has been purchased since 2003 should be able to properly decode and playback TV content online without much trouble.
Things that effect playback quality are: CPU power, video card quality, audio card quality, available RAM, network connection, software used for playback, and method and particulars used during content encoding.
Streaming Video and Audio from Network Remote Locations
The geographic location of your TV content feed will have an effect on your viewing experience. Content provided through back-water networks, third world countries, home connections, throttled network feeds, and otherwise will cause video and audio issues that may make watching TV online unacceptable. If you find that the content you are viewing is not suitable to your viewing tasts, try a different provider. Unfortunately, many providers are in these locations due to the legal issues of providing this kind of content.
Legality of Providing TV Content Online
It is generally illegal in most companies for an individual or group to rebroadcast cable or satellite content over the web without getting express permission or broadcasting rights from the companies in question.
Retransmitting over the air broadcasting is a grey area, as the content is broadcast over the air for anyone with the proper equipment to receive. If you intend to rebroadcast or otherwise provide TV content online, it is best for you to consult a legal authority or legal advice before doing so.
Five Ways to Watch TV on Your PC
This is an awful article.
RadioZX Executive Editor Mighty Quinn
The first thing on the list should be the most common, or I should say...most practical. The BEST way to watch TV on a PC is using a TV Tuner Card.
As a technical expert, this is a very misleading article and considering the audience of this type of article, it should focus on ways to watch TV on your PC...as the title of this article states.
This article simply points out ways to watch "videos" on your PC, NOT watching "TV" on your PC.
Going to a website to download shows is NOT watching TV.
Please be more accurate with your articles.
This is VERY inaccurate!
Five Ways to Watch TV on Your PC
Sat Feb 10, 2007
Sure, you might be sitting at a desk and not really thinking about 24, but why wouldn't you want to watch TV on your computer? Your LCD almost certainly has better resolution than your TV, and when you're right in front of it, with two decent speakers (or more), it can be a pretty good way to watch a show or two.
Here are five ways to get television on your computer.
1) TiVoToGo - If you have a Series2 TiVo, you need TiVoToGo, which lets you download anything you've recorded on your TiVo to your PC. The shows can't be shared with other computers, so if you're planning on watching TV on the road, make sure you install TiVoToGo on your laptop. It's free, people!
3) Classic TV - Like bad TV from the '70s and '80s (and just about any other decade)? Check out In2TV (Internet Explorer only, and even then it's buggy), which has archives of dozens of old shows (some much, much worse than others).
4) Overseas TV - Wanna brush up on your Hungarian? Check out BeelineTV, which streams about 100 networks from countries ranging from China to Slovenia and beyond. You'll find plenty more a wwiTV, which also includes numerous U.S. local channels broadcasting online.
5) When in Doubt, Buy It - You can buy or rent TV show episodes a la carte all over the web. Most popular is probably the iTunes Store: Note that you don't actually need an iPod to buy movies here if you just want to watch them on your computer. An episode is typically $1.99. Amazon Unbox also has similarly prices (though few have much good to say about it).
I already hit five? I haven't even covered connecting your TV to your cable with a tuner card or a USB TV tuner. There's also the famous Slingbox, and you can always buy or rent TV shows on DVD, too.
www.tvants.com is cool place for Chinese TVs and others.
peekvid.com
go to tvu and download free player...live tv ....west coast timezone....spike tv,nbc, fox, espn, some junk...pick your favorite stations
Check out slingbox, www.slingmedia.com/ Allows you to watch your tv from home anywhere
my husband also travels quite extensively outside of the US and he got a device called sling box... It connects to your reciever at home and you can watch from overseas.. you can change channels too... the resolution is great :) We also use skype to communicate instead of cellphone..is free to download and very good connections like your in the same room
www.slingmedia.com-- it allows you to directly connect to your home cable/ tivo / DVR or satellite box at no monthly charge and watch tv through a windows smartphone, laptop, or pocketpc from anywhere in the world-- it works great, and so far we've had no problems wit h it
If you have a Media Center PC That is always turned on and hooked up to Cable you can watch any live TV show or recorded TV from it through Orb.com if you are anywhere else and have a high speed internet connection
you can also go on ABC Full Episode Player, and you dont even have to download it.
You can convert your monitor into a TV tuner with this KWorld tuner thru your USB port. Best price at Buy.com. Check it out. http://www.buy.com/prod/KWorld_USB_2_0_Universal_TV_Tuner/q/loc/101/202247133.html
For those Americans who are abroad and who cannot watch their favorite network shows via the Internet sites of the networks...that's why they invented BitTorrent and YouTube :) It works well the other way around as well. For instance, if you are in the States you will probably not be able to watch "The Amazing Race Asia" -- but most episodes of the show are available for viewing on YouTube. Go to a site like www.YouTubeX.com or www.KeepVid.com and you can download the resulting .FLV file to your machine and watch it over and over to your heart's content. ...just don't say I told ya so though... :)
www.joost.com is awesome, and free! full screen and not streaming video
check out www.tvtonic.com for state of the art technology.....they are on microsofts new vista ultimate...

The best in commercial TV . TVUNETWORKS.com
Check out www.slingmedia.com its hardware that connects to your DVR/cablebox and lets you remotely control and stream programing to your computer.

What about BROADCASTER.COM. Its far better than all the sites mentioned in the article. BROADCASTER has hundreds of movies you can stream or download for free. BROADCASTER also has all the youtube like videos etc...Best one stop solution for all TV needs
I live in Canada and cannot watch shows posted on network websites. The best site is alluc.org. They offer a ton of shows and you don't have to download them onto your computer. Worth checking out!
I have found walmart.com to be a good place for finding movies and TV shows to download and watch on my computer. The TV shows cost $1.98 each and can be transfered to portable devices from your computer. The download process is fairly quick and is very easy also

For TV on the go, a Slingbox is the way to go. This device hooks up to your existing home cable tuner, and has a connection to the internet and/or your home wireless network. The software (also available on a notebook, compatable mobile phone, etc..) basically acts as virtual remote, controlling your existing home programming, and streams it via your mobile device. There are no monthly service charges or fees, just $200-250 for the hardware. I was a bit skeptical myself when I decided to buy it, as far as what it was capable of, but have had no problems, and love it. www.slingbox.com
Check out ReplayTV.com!! The TV viewing/recording program is WONDERFUL!!!
You can also buy a TV card that you can install on one of your PC available slots. You will need to connect it to your cable TV and it even comes with a remote control!!!! There is lots of thing you can do with it like take a snap shot of the current program that you are watching and even record it!!!! Price: around $50-70 dollars
ABC also has lots of free shows http://dynamic.abc.go.com/streaming/landing
alloftv.net is great for reruns of hundreds of shows. tvunetworks.com is one of the better P2P sites for live
Wi-fitv.com is the future. tvtorrent, skype, and everything else mentioned here all in one, especially come Monday when they launch a major upgrade
How come there is no mention of Windows Media Center. All you need is a TV card for your computer. You can record TV (just like TiVo), it downloads a form of TV Guide, you can order movies from Movielink and etc...
http://www.tvunetworks.com/ Free and has a good amount of channels... I watched the super bowl on my laptop when i was stuck at work...

Global TV termanator, which is supposed to be able to watch tv on a computer (I think). I tried it out, but it didn't work because I have a laptop, but if u install the global tv thingy to tv.
Don't bother with inklineglobal, I paid $30 for supposedly 1,000 channels.I am a Brit in the USA there are no live USA channels and the news from England is 2 days old
A Hava player is my choice. http://www.monsoonmultimedia.com/products.html
the best way is a company called smart video

www.pctvpal.com is another good site
www.russiantvonline.com
For those outside the US, consider spend $30 at anonymizer.com. It makes it appear that you are surfing from inside the US, and you are able to access the tv network sites and watch from there
Unlike the Slingbox, which costs nearly $200, www.orb.com allows you to watch all of your local channels from any high speed Internet connection anywhere in the world as well as access all of the documents or pictures on your home computer through this web site. And it is ALL Free
Orb.com is a free program that allows any computer to become a "tivo-like" device. I tried it at home by installing it on a desktop computer with a TV tuner. It took the place of Media Center by becoming my channel guide, recording controller, and more. From any computer connected to the internet, I can securely log into my Orb.com account and access Live TV, my recorded videos, as well as pictures and music.
Using it's season pass feature, I'm recording all episodes of my favorite shows and then watching them from any computer I choose, any time. The quality is not bad. I enjoy the live TV feature the most. I used my wi-fi connected PDA to watch both recorded shows and live TV! I'm not sure why I should keep my TiVo any longer.
I'm using EvolutionTV by Miglia. Works for Mac OSX and uses the S-Video out (or composite out) from my satellite box and plugs into my mac using USB. I can also digitize my old VHS tapes and record them and the TV shows on DVD. It evens utilizes Mac's iCal to schedule recording times
All of these things are great to watch tv on a pc but I found great original programming right on your computer. I found a promo for a new cop drama called Brooks and Brenner whichs premieres tomorrow 2/17/07 at 6pm(EST)and it looks like something can be on NBC.
I just wanted to let all of you know because I watch 90% of my tv on the internet. If you want to watch this show for yourself tomorrow go to www.usergeneratedcontent.tv Internet TV is great!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is there a site other then peekvid where you can watch movies for FREE
FREE as in NADA, worldwide including US and UK, works anywhere too bad only on a Windows machine.... www.tvexe.com A small 1mb download, run it and your off. It does work with WINE for linux and Mac. Has BBC, Bloomsberg, Italian MTV... There's even a pay service for even more shows. It works, it's free, it works... Have fun!
The sony company also sells a thing called location free tv which sends the tv signal over the internet anywhere, over the internet to your Psp Their tv thingy and Your lapyop for about $250
a site that was pretty cool: http://www.utvpc.com
Check out HAVA Wireless HD, www.snappymultimedia.com Allows you to watch your tv at home and from home anywhere.
Streams sources to any broadband-connected Windows PC in the world; built-in wireless networking support; great integration with Windows Media Center PCs; can accept as many as four A/V inputs (composite, S-Video, RF, and component) with pass-through; no host PC or monthly charges required; simultaneous streaming to multiple clients on a LAN; controls many brands of cable and satellite boxes and DVRs; excellent video quality over LAN, decent video quality via the Internet.
http://www.livetvforpc.com
http://www.tvrss.net is all you need
www.collegerage.com, bunch of shows streaming, some work some dont
There is a sight called ShowStash which lets you see lots of tv shows as well as a number of movies. Check it out! http://www.showstash.com
www.fanpop.com/
http://www.papitv.com watch tv from around the world for free
You missed any coverage of IPTV or the idea that some great programming is being done by outside of the networks (www.rocketboom.com, www.wallstrip.com, www.mommy.TV) for very specific audiences (narrowcasting)
Slingbox does not provide any tv content. It will only send the tv content that comes to your home via cable or satellite to a PC at some other location. Big whup (heavy sarcasm). This article is about alternative sources for TV content. Slingbox is worthless for this. One thing I did learn from another poster was TVU. It's the bomb, baby!
I use SopCast and TVU Player. Both good programs. And Free too!!!
go to www.ppmate.com its the best thing around now got good streaming qualities and it even allows you to record
I have a TV tuner and it is the best. Imagine TiVo with a DVD burner.
But no subscription fees, comes with video editing software (great for removing ads)and the only limit to how much you record is your HDD space.
I have a 250gb external drive just for my shows.
It also saves you money.
Why buy season x of a show when you can record it for free then burn it to DVD yourself.
Best of all a good TV tuner only runs about $100!
Another great tool is Slingbox or Sony's Location Free.
I prefer the Location Free system because it allows me to use my PSP, I can watch my local cable or DVD's in my 100 disk changer anywhere that I can connect to the internet.
Both of these devices are about $199!
Websites are cool but there are limits to what you can watch.
With these alternatives you can do much more
