The Top 10 No. 1 Albums of All Time
When the British public was invited to vote for their all-time favorite album that hit No. 1 on the Official U.K. Album Chart, the vote wasn't even close. The overwhelming winner was the Beatles' legendary 1967 album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."
"It revolutionized music and what we expect from an album," Radio 2's Simon Mayo, told the BBC News. The seminal record was followed by Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and U2's "The Joshua Tree," which is the only album produced in the last 20 years that made the top 10.
Some 220,000 votes were cast among the 787 No. 1 albums that range from Frank Sinatra's "Songs for Swingin' Lovers," which was tops on the first-ever Official U.K. Album Chart in 1956, to Christina Aguilera's "Back to Basics," the most recent bestseller.
Top 10 No. 1 albums of all time:
"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," The Beatles
"Thriller," Michael Jackson
"The Joshua Tree," U2
"Rumors," Fleetwood Mac
"Wish You Were Here," Pink Floyd
"Revolver," The Beatles
"Bridge Over Troubled Water," Simon and Garfunkel
"Abbey Road," The Beatles
"A Night at The Opera," Queen
"The Beatles," The Beatles
Fun facts:
The most recent release to make it into the top 100 was Madonna's "Confessions on a Dance Floor," which came in at No. 37. It was No. 1 in November 2005.
Because so many iconic albums never made it to No. 1 on the charts, the poll also included a "best of the rest" category. This was topped by Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon," which was only No. 2 on its release in 1973.
They may be classics, but Meat Loaf's "Bat Out of Hell," David Bowie's "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" and The Eagles's "Hotel California" never made it to No. 1.
