Kiss Your Constitution Goodbye?
President Barack Obama quietly signed into law an act of Congress which many feel threatens the rights guaranteed to us by our Constitution.
Critics say it goes beyond anything for which previous President George W. Bush's administration was criticized.
Under some interpretations of the act, the United States no longer guarantees due process of law to those within -- let alone outside of -- our borders.
Signed into law by President Obama during the waning hours of 2011, this measure is entitled the National Defense Authorization Act.
That is now the law of the land.
While Republicans in Congress may have written this legislation, the Democrats helped to pass it -- and President Obama signed it into law.
One of the most disturbing aspects of the act, in the view of many civil libertarians, is that it appears to lack the limitations usually a part of laws purporting to affect national security.
Among the extreme examples posited by some critics are questions such as what might happen if a future American government concluded that Muslims or Christians or atheists were a potential threat to our national security.
Critics of the new law say we are witnessing the end of constitutional protections such as due process.
They compare the changes which the new law provides for with the laws of nations like China, Russia or North Korea.
